  5. Nothing wrong with detours once in awhile, the view is sometimes quite interesting.

If it's proven that the driver was at fault by falling asleep, we'll see the union once again jumping hoops to make sure the person's job stays safe and they get paid while being off during the investigation. Can always count on the unions to protect the people that should be fired. If this would have been at any other time of the day, dozens of people would have been killed.

    1. Moreover, I'm sure the transit union will be clamoring for more stringent work rules -- like " See how working too long is dangerous for everyone? We should only work a maximum of 6 hours per day for full pay. "

    2. The overnight workers will get a raise because it's dangerous to work at night.

    3. They usually already get a quite substantial "shift premium". Standard in any union and even most non-union industries in the past.

  6. And you're right - If this was later in the day, we'd be looking at a fair number of dead people. And I honestly don't see the driver getting fired, because this is Chicago and I have such low expectations of conduct.

  7. you would think other safety items would be in place for this not to happen?? I think NTSB will find a little more than operator sleeping!

    1. Initial reports said there is an automatic braking system that was deactivated.

  8. Luckily the guy on the left had his luggage with him. I'm sure he needed a fresh pair of underwear!

  9. Give her a break. Come on, it was only the second time she fell asleep at the controls. What ever happened to the " three strikes and you are out" rule ? She was given a slap on the wrist for the first one and told not to do it again or you will be suspended with pay which she is receiving now. How do I get a job like this ?

  10. I wish someone would take the initiative like the owner of this blog has taken and develop and maintain an ongoing tally of the billions of dollars of our taxpayer contributions to the city that have been wasted by either budget overruns, crony payouts or lawsuits on behalf of incompetent useless city workers that have been incurred. The number would be staggering.

  13. Lets see. How can I stay awake all night long so I do not put my passengers in harms way. Well there is coffee, coke, energy drinks and the list goes on. Fire old sleepy head before she kills someone or takes out another escalator. I wonder how much her snooze will end up costing this city. Law suites, major damage to a train, replacing an escalator.

  14. clickety clap clickety clap how did I get this aching back

  15. Dear CTA. Can you please relocate old sleepy head to a overnight security guard position in an abandon rail yard guarding nothing but rats. We would all sleep much better.

  16. Steve Martin in the gas station scene from the movie The Jerk. "He's shooting at these cans. He hate's cans!' Perhaps old sleepy head hate's escalator's.
