CWB's Wednesday morning update on this story is posted.  Our May 1 update is online as is May 4th's.
--------------

UPDATED INFO 5:45PM APRIL 30:
• Ald. Scott Waguespack just issued an email in which he stated that "the Police do not know the motive but say this was not a random attack, and that the victim met up with the possible offenders elsewhere in the City before coming to the Fullerton location."

DNAInfo Chicago reports that the victim "was found without a wallet and cell phone…But police could not confirm that he had been robbed."

--------------

A 32-year-old man who died after being found with severe head trauma on a Lincoln Park street early yesterday spent some of his final hours in Wrigleyville.

A police department source has confirmed to CWB that the victim was beaten, but the motive is unknown.

Around 3:55 Monday morning, police received a 911 call from a man who said that his "friend" had been "jumped on" at 1530 W. Fullerton. The caller offered no description or direction of flight for the alleged offenders.

Jacob Klepacz, who was found unresponsive outside of the Fullerton address, was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Medical Center shortly thereafter.

Just four hours earlier, Klepacz checked in at Dugout Sports Bar, 950 W. Addison, in Wrigleyville. Sunday evening, Klepacz had been at Timothy O'Toole's, a popular bar in Streeterville.

Exactly what transpired in the hours between is the subject of a Chicago Police Department death investigation.

CPD case #HX239937.

    1. Because they would have to admit that there is a problem on the North side.

  3. He was beaten to death by some of the savages that prowl the streets at night. Police, probably hiding the crime because of bad publicity.............................

  7. One thing I am wondering though - why no description of the attackers? Why cant the friend describe them?

  8. Why was it only a matter of time? If you know something, his grieving family would appreciate the information.

    1. I believe the poster meant that it was only a matter of time until one of these robberies/muggings happening more and more in our north side neighborhoods resulted in someone dying from injuries sustained in the attacks/robberies.

    2. Hello Anonymous That comment writer was probably referring to their belief that the incident is related to Wrigleyville crime issues—a conclusion that has not yet been reached by any stretch—not the victim's conduct or character.

We are very sorry for your loss.

Should anyone have information that could assist investigators, Chicago police may be contacted at 312-744-8263 Refer to case #HX239937.

  11. FYI DNAinfo just tweeted the headline "Attack on man killed in Lincoln Park wasn't random, alderman's office says." But the link is goes to a page-not-found error.

  12. Something's not right, a "friend" called about the victim but didn't give any helpful info about who/where/why but the fact that he got beat up. I get a strange feeling that something went down and the "friend" calling the cops might be the one involved. Maybe some sort dealing or argument that went way farther then expected.

    1. It was no "friend" of Jacob's. No one who knew him would just leave him like that, or even let it happen without a fight in the first place.

  13. When will Rahm hire more police and admit they are losing the streets to crime? This isn't a black problem, white problem, drug problem or gang problem. It's not having police on the street in all neighborhoods period.

    1. Rahm does not want police he wants bike lanes and money for campaign donors projects. He must be defeated.
